Interior Photos

There are very few photos from before the fire (1905), especially inside. We are aware of only 2 images showing a very different interior look. As the writing on this old scanned photo says this is the Drawing Room. This is part of a collection of photos taken in 1898 before the fire. The wall with the large opening in, is where the current pillars are - so the drawing room was split into 2 smaller rooms back then. The fireplace you can see through the opening is where the present fireplace is - conservatory is to its right. You can just see the door on the left (behind the folded screen) which goes to the central hall. The large painting to the left of the opening, you can just tell is of a woman, looks very similar to the large one presently in the drawing room, but is not actually the same painting. And although this was before the fire I believe this painting was still in the house in 1984 before we moved in. I believe this is the Saloon before the fire. The fireplace is in the same place, and similar style, and the bookshelves behind the sofa are approximately the same, but painted white now. Note the Victorian habit of filling the walls with paintings. You can just see that there are three on the wall to the right of the fire place. I believe this is part of a collection of photos taken in 1898. The Conservatory showing a range of very large tropical plants. The windows have blinds, remnants of which existed in 1984 before the restoration. The swimming pool did not exist at this time. I believe this was taken at the same date as the other photos in this collection in 1898, when the conservatory would have been heated by underfloor heating pipes. The Conservatory was not affected by the fire in 1905.
